T4 — Employment Income

  • No CPP/EI withheld — reported as paid
Generally yes, once payments to one contractor pass $500 in the year, or if you withheld any tax regardless of amount. Payments to incorporated companies are the exception — they invoice and report on their own T2.
CRA charges a daily penalty per information return, starting at $100 minimum and scaling with how many slips are late and how long. Filing even one day past the deadline triggers it — there's no grace period.
Both are due by February 28 following the tax year. Employees and contractors need their copies by the same date. We recommend having your records to us by mid-January to file with room to spare.
We work with QuickBooks Online, Xero, and Wave. If you're not yet on accounting software, we can help you get set up
on the right tool for your size.
A T4 is for employees you ran payroll for — CPP, EI, and tax withheld at source. A T4A is for contractors, fees for services, and other non-payroll income, usually with no deductions withheld. If you're not sure how someone should be classified, we review it before filing.
